Beauty and the Beast: Pictures
Pictures of Beauty and the Beast
Here are some images from the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. They are arranged in alphabet order. All are Public Domain due the time of death of creators (70+ years).
Anne Anderson (1874-1952)
Anne Anderson's Old, Old Fairy Tales is a collection of about 20 classic fairy tales published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, USA in 1935 and reprinted several times by different publishers.
Richard Andre (1834-1907)
Richard Andre adapted the story of Beauty and the Beast into a toy
book, published by Dean & Son, London in 1880. The book is a base
for home theater, promoting active listening and creative thinking among
children (and their parents too).
Ada Leonora Bowley (1866-1943)
I don’t have much information about the illustration above. Ada Leonora Bowley made most of her pictures together with her sister but this project (including several black and white drawings) seems to be her own brainchild. The pictures were created and published around 1920.
Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825-1916)
This
book is considered the finest among Eleanor Vere Boyle’s (or E.V.B.’s
as she signed herself) works. It was published by Sampson Low, Marston,
Low, and Searle and printed by R. Clay, Sons, and Taylor in London
around 1875. The quality of printing is spectacular for those times.
Gordon Browne (1858-1932)
The illustrations above come from Beauty and the Beast rewritten by Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards (1850-1943) and published by Blackie and Son, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh & Dublin in 1886.
John Callcott Horsley (1817-1903)
As
you can see, the illustrator decided to portray the tale in a more
exotic, Eastern environment. The picture book was published under the
title: Beauty and the Beast: An Entirely New Edition. With Pictures by
an Eminent Artist by Joseph Cundall, London in 1843.
Alfred Concanen (1835-1886)
The picture above doesn’t come from the book but was designed for the poster for the music cover of the fairy tale.
John Conder (1868-1909)
The
story of Beauty & the Beast: the complete fairy story was printed
by Lemercier in Paris in 300 copies. The publisher was William Clowes
& Sons, Limited, London. 260 of which are for sale in England and
America. The project is dated 1895.
Walter Crane (1845-1915)
Walter
Crane’s vision of Beauty and the Beast is one of the most well-known
ones, done in his signature Arts and Crafts style with an astonishing
amount of details. Edmond Evans, printer and publisher offered it to the
marked as a stand-alone picture book and in combination with two other
fairy tales: The Frog Prince and The Hind in the Wood.
